India Votes in Vice Presidential Election 2025: C.P. Radhakrishnan Likely to Succeed Jagdeep Dhankhar
The election for India's Vice President in 2025 has gotten a lot of attention because lawmakers will vote to pick the country's 14th Vice President. The election happened sooner than expected because Jagdeep Dhankhar quit his job because he was having health problems. According to India's rules, any empty spot for Vice President needs to be filled within half a year, so the Election Commission said the voting would be on September 9, 2025.
Why This Election is Significant
The Vice President of India is the second most important person in the government and is also in charge of the Rajya Sabha. The Vice President also takes over as Acting President if the President cannot do their job. Because this position is so important, the election is a big deal politically, especially with what's going on between the current National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition INDIA group.
The Candidates
C.P. Radhakrishnan – The NDA has chosen C.P. Radhakrishnan, who is the Governor of Maharashtra and a high-ranking member of the BJP. People know him for being connected to regular people and for his long time in politics, so many think he will win because the NDA has the most members in Parliament.
Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy (Retd.) – The opposition INDIA alliance has picked B. Sudarshan Reddy, a former judge from the Supreme Court in Telangana. His running shows that the opposition is trying to use someone who is not a politician to challenge the group that is in power.
Both people running were officially announced in the middle of August, which set the scene for a very important political fight.
The Voting Process
People from both parts of Parliament — those voted in and those picked — make up the group that votes for the Vice President. The voting is done in secret using a system where votes can be moved from one person to another. Voting started at 10 AM on September 9 in the Parliament building and should continue until 5 PM, with the votes being counted soon after. Reports say that over 95% of people voted, which means the result will be clear.
NDA’s Edge and Political Implications
The NDA has a good number of people in Parliament, so their person has a good chance of winning. Political experts think C.P. Radhakrishnan will almost certainly win unless a lot of people unexpectedly vote for someone else. If he becomes Vice President, it would make the BJP more powerful in the Upper House of Parliament, especially when the ruling group wants to get important laws passed more easily.
On the other hand, the INDIA group's choice to put forward a well-respected judge shows they are trying to make a moral and symbolic point, rather than just fighting based on numbers
What Lies Ahead
Once the new Vice President is chosen, they will have the job for five years. If C.P. Radhakrishnan wins like people expect, he will take over from Jagdeep Dhankhar and become the 14th Vice President of India. How he handles the discussions and actions of the Rajya Sabha will be very important, because political fights often stop important bills from moving forward.
This election, even though the result is pretty clear, shows the changing plans of both the NDA and INDIA groups as they get ready for upcoming state and national elections.
